"Radon is an odorless, colorless, tasteless gas that is produced by the natural decay of uranium and radium in the soil. Since radon is a gas, it can easily enter homes and other buildings through cracks in the foundation. Inside of homes, radon may become trapped and build up to dangerous levels. Exposure to radon increases your risk of developing lung cancer.
Two out of five homes in Dakota County have radon levels above the acceptable U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines.
Test your home Dakota County Public Health has radon test kits available at the Western Service Center and Northern Service Center for loan at no cost to county residents. Reusable test devices can be picked up and returned to the Public Health Department at:
On the second floor of the Western Service Center (Apple Valley)
On the fourth floor of the Northern Service Center (West St. Paul)
Pick up a kit from either location between from 8 a.m.-4:15 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The test takes four to seven days to complete. After the kits are returned to Public Health, the results will be analyzed and mailed to the home.
Radon test kits are also available at local hardware and home remodeling stores. When you purchase a kit, check to see if the purchase price includes lab analysis. Some kits require an additional fee to analyze your results.
There are options for purchasing a radon test through hardware stores, which work pretty well. What doesn't work well is trying to install a radon system yourself. With the days of HGTV DYIer's and the You-Tuber's - I have seen systems done without professionals and they usually do not turn out well, and in fact during inspections are called out to be completely replaced. So, if you need a radon system, please think twice before trying to do it yourself or going with the very cheapest bid. After all, this is your life and health you are dealing with. Please seek professional advice and installation.
